So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
War is over over
If you want it
War is over Now…
It’s been a while since my last update here. It’s not that I’m backing off from my ramblings, I’ve just been busy. Work’s moving at a pace similar to the local rivers (fast at the moment for info), family are all well and I’ve been spending quite allot of time reading and planning for a book that I’ve a mind to write. Would love to discuss it with anyone more knowledgeable about these things than me, so if you know any publishers/editors that would be up for a chat drop me an email please!
Anyhooow, what’s been going on with the world? Well, strictly come dancing finally finished. Big Brother is starting again. X-Factor produced more tawdry chart crap. The world moves ever onwards it would seem. Funny that in order to protest about the mass produced X-Factor rubbish the only thing people could think to do is to buy something else. Are we as a species programmed to want more for ever, to need more stuff? It seems that our genes have been programmed by luck, design or circumstance to make us the top of the food chain, by having the ability to sit in call centres and dream of owning more plastic and metal. Is that all we can really amount to? more more more?
Whatever happened to humanity, charity, compassion? Love, freedom, unity?
Utopian dreaming or achievable reality?
An example of the problem are the recent Climate discussions in Copenhagen. Ignoring the fact that we were represented by Nick Griffin, ignorant racist thug and climate change sceptic as an MEP, the talks turned out nothing short of a big fat waste of time, money and carbon. I’ve read blogs and newspaper dialogues that blame the Americans, especially Obama. I’ve read articles blaming the chinese. In truth however, I think we ought to stop pointing the finger at others and blame ourselves. No matter where you are in the world, no matter what political party or god you believe in. No matter whether you dutifully recycle your wine bottles and compost your kitchen scraps.
You, me, we, them, I, us – That’s who’s to blame. We are, one and all, subconscious weapons of mass consumption.
As a species we can react to immediate threats, we can cope with disaster when it hits, but given advance warning of a crisis we will stop at nothing to ignore it. To deny the impending inevitable and just keep calm and carry on.
We all need to change, and immediately. Not in 2015, not next year. Now.
I’m not suddenly grabbing my hair shirts but I’m being proactive. Do the same, and at this time of over indulgence start to think about what you are using. Take stock and think about ways that you can start to use less and from Jan the 1st 2010 do what I do, and try to use less. Less water, less energy, less selotape, less wrapping paper. Throw away less food Etc Etc. We all know the things we should be doing, but how many of us actually do it? It’s not rocket science, it’s actually not even hard to do. but it does require a conscious decision.
So do me one favour in 2010 (or more importantly do my son a favour) and use less. Lets try this unity thing one more time, and this is the perfect time of year to think about the things that are really important, and the things that, really, we could do without.
Happy Christmas
